BIOMECHANICS CONFERENCE 2017 |

2017
Keynote Speaker Dr Monica Maly Monica Maly is an Associate Professor in the
Department of Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo. After
completing a BSc in Physiotherapy (1998), Monica pursued an MSc (2000) and
PhD (2005) at the Clinical Mechanics Group at Queen’s University, while
working clinically. She started her ongoing volunteer contributions to
the Ontario Physiotherapy Association in 1998, including the role of Director
(2004-2006). Her post-doctoral training at the Arthritis Community
Research & Evaluation Unit (University Hospital Network, Toronto) was
supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Monica
has contributed 50 peer-reviewed articles and over 63 peer-reviewed
presentations. Monica has been recognized with the CIHR New
Investigator (2011-2016), Queen’s University Distinguished Alumni (2016),
Ontario Physiotherapy Association Recognition for Research (2013) and
American Society of Biomechanics President’s (2009) Awards. Recently
Monica co-chaired the 2016 Canadian Society for Biomechanics conference. Monica uses biomechanics to boost mobility in older adults with
OA. To-date, she has earned $1.6 million as sole or principal investigator
from NSERC, CIHR and other sources. Her collaborations as a
co-investigator have resulted in another $3.1 million. Monica's
research expertise focuses on (i) using
state-of-the-art motion analysis infrastructure for the acquisition, analysis
and interpretation of data revealing the biomechanical mechanisms of joint
breakdown; (ii) examining the worsening of arthritis using patient reported
outcomes; and (iii) designing and testing therapeutic exercises in OA. |
